The streets of this glittering wonderland are filled with entrepreneurs and criminals in equal measure, and paved with the hustle of countless would-be superstars before their dreams meet grim reality.
As visitors gaze across the prismatic city skyline, they are greeted with a cacophony of sales pitches; ads for cars, clothes, concerts, and can’t-lose pyramid schemes fill the flashing screens covering the city’s towering skyscrapers.
But the glitter camouflages a grim underbelly, filled with the grime of criminals and con artists; slick and desperate citizens on a never-ending quest to lighten the wallets of gullible newcomers. Beware of strangers’ too-good-to-be-true propositions, for it is often said that in New Hollywood, a sufficiently elaborate scam is indistinguishable from legitimate commerce. Many a naïve businessman, tourist or traveler has eagerly forfeited their last dimes within days of arriving at the city’s glowing spaceport.
In New Hollywood, a mix of hope and greed usually leads to a tragic end.
2. KUSH ISLAND
The residents of Kush Island are far from alone.
An eerie, supernatural feeling infects the air; spirit sightings have become so frequent that they are now hardly even mentioned. Many residents attribute the increasing supernatural occurrences to an imminent threat, describing the spirits as silent protectors. No matter the cause, humans and creatures of Kush have learned to coexist with a whole manner of oddities.
This archipelago of cannabis-covered islands cultivates Marijuana so potent it is thought to possess a variety of magical powers. The effects are said to be dependent on the strain consumed and the character of the individual consuming it.
Unfortunately, the commercial potential of Kush has long drawn the attention of New Hollywood executives. Recent attempts to colonize and exploit its dense cannabis forests seem to have provoked the wrath of the land. Tensions culminated last year in The Bathhouse Massacre of 4999, where a party of New Hollywood settlers mysteriously perished. More and more residents have begun to believe the spirits took matters into their own hands, as no one has stepped forward to claim this violent act.
From a distance, one would never suspect the geo-political turmoil that embroils the serene Kush Island and its surrounding lands. One might go so far as to say that the beauty of Kush can only be appreciated from afar.
Too many meddling hands and the magic will be lost.
